How To Get Your Home Vacation Ready This Summer!

May 27, 2025

Heading Out? Here's How to Get Your Home Vacation-Ready This Summer in Louisiana & Texas

Summer in Louisiana and Texas is all about sunshine, crawfish boils, family road trips, and weekend escapes. But before you hit the road, it’s important to make sure your home is just as ready for your vacation as you are. With high temps, unpredictable storms, and plenty of humidity, Southern summers can be tough on unattended homes. Use this quick checklist to prep your home for peace of mind while you're away!

1. Adjust Your Thermostat (But Don’t Turn It Off!)

It might be tempting to turn off your AC while you're away, but in this heat, that’s a no-go. High temperatures and humidity can damage wood furniture, floors, and even your walls. Instead:

  • Set your thermostat to 78–82°F to save energy while keeping air circulating.
  • Use a programmable or smart thermostat if possible—you can adjust it remotely if your return date changes!

2. Unplug & Protect

Power surges from summer storms are no joke in Louisiana and Texas. Before you leave:

  • Unplug TVs, gaming systems, coffee makers, and other small appliances.
  • Consider using surge protectors for key electronics.
  • Shut down your computer and Wi-Fi if you won't need remote access while away.

3. Check the Gutters & Drainage

Heavy summer rains can quickly overwhelm clogged gutters or blocked drains. A quick clean-out before you go helps prevent:

  • Water pooling around your foundation
  • Leaks or water damage
  • Unwanted mosquito breeding grounds

4. Secure Windows, Doors & Outdoor Items

Summer storms (and high winds) can move more than just leaves.

  • Make sure all windows and doors are locked tight.
  • Bring in patio furniture, umbrellas, and decor—or secure them well.
  • If you have a pool, check that it’s covered properly and the filter is on a timer.

5. Pause the Mail & Arrange Yard Care

An overstuffed mailbox and an overgrown lawn are telltale signs no one’s home.

  • Put your mail on hold through USPS or ask a neighbor to collect it.
  • Hire someone to mow your lawn and water plants—especially important during dry spells.

6. Set Lights on Timers

A dark house, night after night, can be a beacon for break-ins.

  • Use smart plugs or traditional timers to turn lights on and off.
  • Stick to a natural-looking pattern, like a porch light in the evening or a lamp on at dusk.

7. Let Someone Know You’re Gone

Have a trusted neighbor or friend check in every few days.

  • Ask them to do a quick walkaround.
  • Leave a spare key in case of emergencies.
  • Bonus: they can bring in a surprise delivery or water that stubborn potted plant you forgot!

Getting away this summer? Whether you're heading to the beach or just relaxing out of town for the weekend, taking a little time to prep your home can save you stress—and possibly money—down the road. A well-prepared home means you can truly kick back, relax, and enjoy your vacation.
