Pros and Cons of Vinyl Plank Flooring

February 1, 2021

A popular flooring option for our homeowners has quickly become luxury vinyl plank. Vinyl plank flooring provides the look of wood, but at a more affordable price.

It also is a great option if a homeowner wants a consistent flooring through the entirety of the home.

Pros of vinyl plank flooring:

  • It can be used in wet areas, such as bathrooms, the utility and the kitchen. Depending on the type, vinyl floor is durable, water resistant and many styles are completely waterproof, therefore if you have a leak in the kitchen, your floor will not get damaged.
  • It has the on-trend look of wood flooring. The vinyl planks mimic wood planks and can have varying grain and stain options to match any style.
  • It is cost effective. Although it may look like wood floors, vinyl plank flooring does not carry the expense that real wood floors do. It can be a cost effective way to achieve the look our homeowners desire.
  • It's tough! Vinyl plank flooring is resistant to dents, scuffs and scratches and is a great durable option for high traffic areas such as entryways, living rooms and bedrooms.

Cons of vinyl plank flooring:

  • It may be subject to discoloration over time. When exposed to constant, direct sunlight, vinyl plank (depending on the quality) can fade over time.
  • It is not very eco-friendly. Vinyl planks are not biodegradable and can be difficult to recycle.
  • It's just not real wood. If you are looking for those real wood floors, this just isn't it. If you are looking to increase your resale value or want the option to refinish your floors, vinyl planks may not be for you.
